Long before country and bluegrass conquered the world in a modern way, the music of small communities of farmers and then miners in the eastern United States made people dance and dream. This rural music entered the airwaves in the early twentieth century under the name Hillbilly Music and later “old-time.” Its origins can be traced to European and African folk traditions from which various dances and ballads and other songs emerged. Hills of Belgium, or Lorcan Fahy (fiddle, vocals) and Jeremy Fraboni (banjo, vocals), are the Belgian ambassadors of Belgian mountain music. Together with a host of old-time musicians, they will play a captivating old-time ball, assisted by caller Annick Odom. We open the evening with a dance initiation square dance by Belgo-American Annick Odom from West Virginia. Finally, we end the evening with a smashing jam session.
